Trikes by Type

Please note that this list is outdated but it still gives you an idea of the different types of trikes that are available. The growing trike market has motivated manufacturers to continually update their product lineup.

I've put together a list to help the new triker decide what trike is best for her or him. I've divided my list into type of trikes and what they are best suited for (in my humble opinion).

I've broken trikes down into the categories listed below. Many trikes fall within more then one category.

1. Performance
2. Hybrid (performance and comfort)
3. Cruisers
4. Off Road
5. Suspended
6. Folding
7. Touring
8. Electric Assist
9. Adaptive

NOTE: There are many quality trike makers. The manufacturers listed below are the ones I'm familiar with and I'm comfortable categorizing. My list represents tadpole style trikes (one wheel in the rear and two wheels in front).

PERFORMANCE
Performance trikes are the fastest and lightest trikes commercially available. Their low center of gravity, longer wheelbase and skinny tires maker a fun but hard ride. They perform best on good paved roads and trails.

OFF ROAD
Many trikes can handle maintained gravel and dirt roads but the true off road trikes are a specialized breed. All are basically an adaption of an existing trike model to off road conditions.

SUSPENDED
Although comfort is priority one with suspended trikes some suspended trikes are also built to perform well and can be considered a hybrid. Some trikes have full suspension while others opt for rear suspension only.

FOLDING
Folders have the ability to fold up into a reasonably small configuration. They are becoming increasingly popular and easier then ever to fold and unfold. For some a folder is the only option due to space and travel constraints.

ELECTRIC ASSIST
Electric assist trikes offer the triker a little extra energy when needed. Some trike manufactures offer a complete package that includes electric assist. There are also after market electric motors and power packs that can be adapted to most trikes.
