Latest Pics on My Instagram

I post on Instagram a few times a month. I feel that it may help to normalize recumbent triking. It also makes me feel more connected in a world where a traditional bike is the "accepted" form of cycling. Although Instagram is favored by a younger crowd trying to look happy and pretty, some with thousands of followers I can still make my way through the maze of Instagram users and find a fair number of like minded cyclists. I get trike and velomobile riders following me but for the most part I'm followed by other cyclists and assorted characters. The cyclists I follow, average partypace cyclists and adventure cyclists, help motivate me to get out and ride when I'm dragging.

I'm also on Facebook and on my personal Facebook page I pretty much just automatically re-post the stuff I put on Instagram. Even though Instagram is owned by Facebook it's a lot less cluttered.  On Instagram I've learned to simply stay on topic (trikes of course) if you want people to stay interested in what you do and hopefully get cyclists and others to look at trikes as a normal cycling option.

I get a lot of interest in my trike but people have a hard time getting out of their comfort zone. The two biggest issues are 1. safety and 2. being different. Issue one is easy to talk about but issue two is a tough one. It takes a lot of convincing for people to accept not being "normal". My hope is that in time a recumbent trike will become more common. Maybe a decade or two?

Instagram Post 11/2

No picnic this year for us National Park Service Volunteers. Drive by meetup instead. I triked on over to Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa to say hey to NPS regulars and pick up a bag of cool stuff. I started volunteering for the NPS 21 years ago and would never have imagined I would be called off from my duties at Cheeseboro Canyon because of a pandemic. Oh well, keep riding.

Instagram Post

Clearing my head on a sunny winter day. Mentally prepping for back surgery next week. Last back surgery was back in 2009 and it gave me a fresh start. I expect the same again this time around. More boring details another time.

Instagram Post - E Trikes on NPS Trails

Long hikes are a memory from the past as age tightens it’s scaly clutch. But now the National Park Service allows e-bikes (pedal-assist only) on trails where bikes are currently allowed. The Santa Monica Mountains NR defines a bike as pedal powered with 2 or 3 wheels. Yup...3 wheels is getting legitimized. So my e-trike can get me off the surface streets and back onto the trails. Well at least the tame fire roads for now. But that’s good enough for me.

Another Day Another Ride

Another day another ride. Again with the Santa Monica Mountains as my backdrop.

I opted for my Catrike Expedition today. After missing so much riding over the last 4 months I needed the tame low gears and more upright comfort of the Expedition. It'll take a few rides before what's left of my old legs to be back in shape to start taking faster rides on the 700.

Back Riding Along the Santa Monica Mountains

I'm so out of shape from not riding during the move back to Thousand Oaks, CA. Experienced some mild cramping in my left hamstring. I haven't had that happen in years, but I also haven't laid off of riding for so long. I'll be staying put in Thousand Oaks for a long time so I can focus on riding and whip my old legs back into shape. Even with a little cramping it's soooo nice to have the wind in my face again.

No speed records today. Haha. Getting there one pedal stroke at a time.
At least I manage to keep my rusty bones lubricated.

My Instagram 8/12/18 - Central Coast Wine Country

Cruising the Central Coast Wine Country

The weather cooperated today and stayed under 90 degrees during my wine country ride. I chose to take the 700 instead of the Expedition today. I put the larger Kojak tire on the rear and put some extra padding on the headrest to soften the harsh backcountry rides. I also slowed down the pace on the rough roads and all was good.
