Throwback Thursday - Riding Loaded Down

February 2012

Before getting my new hips in late 2013 I would ride loaded down with groceries (picture) or I'd be towing Betzi. By the middle of 2013 my hips were toast.

After getting my new hips, riding light and fast has become the new norm.

Valve Core Removal Tool

For those who use tubes with removable valve cores here's the perfect tool. If I find that a tire has a very slow leak it's usually the valve core that needs a little tightening. 

Park Tool VC-1 

The plastic piece at the top of the picture is what I used in the past to tighten valve cores. It would wear out fast.
The VC-1 is designed for both Presta and Schrader removalble valve cores. The notch in the middle is for Presta stem extensions.

The VC-1 fits nicely between the spokes. The VC-1 on the valve core the core can be easily tighten by hand.

Blowing Off Steam

With 5 kids ranging in age from 36 years down to 16 years and 8 grandkids life can get a little crazy. Right now to ease all the craziness I need a anti-depressant and anti-anxiety drug topped with a cocktail of adeline, endorphins and a shot of endocanabanoids (the latest compound associated with a runners high or rather a trikers high). 

THE PRESCRIPTION...a fast ride on my 700 to blow off a little steam and to sort out the craziness. I was blessed with a perfect day to put life back into a positive perspective.

The day was cool, crisp and sunny with gentle clouds speaking of better days to come.

Feeling relaxed after a 700 fix. 

Things are looking brighter.

Evolution of My Rides

2009

My first trike, a Catrike Expedition. I spend the first year riding solo, no doggie.

2010-2013

For the next three years most of my rides  were with Betzi towed behind my Catrike Expedition. Obviously weight was of no concern back then

During the three years from 2010 to 2013 I would occasionally ride my Catrike 700 (16" front wheels). It was on one of those occasions back in 2011 that I had a heart attack while riding the 700. I was pushing hard and a piece of plaque broke off inside my LAD and put an end to my ride that day.

2014 to present

In 2014 I traded in my old Catrike 700 for the new Catrike 700 with the 20" from wheels. Having had both hips replaced at the end of 2013 I opted for a lighter ride and I eventually sold my Catrike Expedition in favor of riding the 700.

Thinking I still wanted to take short tours sometime in the near future I purchased a second Catrike 700 that I dubbed "Red". I set it up for touring but soon came to the realization that I like to ride light and fast and be done in time to catch "Happy Hour" with Carrie. I soon sold "Red".

And here I am at the recent Cool Breeze Century enjoying my Catrike 700.  I've settled into a style of riding that makes riding my Catrike 700 a pure joy.
